1883 Victoria Gold Full Sovereign Melbourne Mint Saint George Coin
Young Head Reverse By William Wyon
The obverse of these Melbourne mint coins features William Wyon's Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria with the artist's initials on the truncation of her neck. An 'M' mintmark is shown below, and an inscription around reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'.
Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George
Benedetto Pistrucci's interpretation of the legend of Saint George and the dragon is shown on the reverse of these 1883-M coins. These issues feature a horse with a short tail with the date (1883) below and the artist's initials to the right, small in size and hardly visible.
Melbourne Mint Coin Struck In 22-Carat Gold
Melbourne mint Sovereigns are struck to the same specification as their London and Sydney mint counterparts. These coins are made of 22-carat gold, measure just over 22 millimetres in diameter and weigh approximately 7.98 grams.
1883-M St George Sovereign Mintage
1,623,358 gold 'full' Sovereigns were struck with the Saint George reverse at the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint in 1883. A further 427,092 Sovereigns were also issued with the shield reverse in the same year, though these are regarded as very rare.
Collecting Historic Branch Mint Sovereigns
Collecting Sovereigns from the Melbourne mint is a rewarding endeavour, particularly the issues of the 1870s and 1880s which are richly varied, providing a challenge to any numismatist who wants to complete a full set. An 1883 date is a key acquisition and ours are ready to add to your Sovereign collection.
