Scarce 1873 Melbourne mint gold Sovereigns (S 3857, Marsh 95). Records indicate that just 752,199 'full' Sovereigns were struck at the Melbourne mint in the second year of its operation. The second Australian branch, mint, was founded in 1872 and continued to issue these 22-carat gold coins until 1931. The 1873 issue is distinguished from its London and Sydney mint counterparts by a tiny 'M' mintmark that appears below William Wyon's portrait of Queen Victoria. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon design created for the first milled Sovereigns. During the 1870s and 1880s the Melbourne mint struck coins with the St George design, alongside others with a shield reverse, but in 1873 just the St George reverse was issued.

Young Head Portrait Of Queen Victoria

A variation of William Wyon's Young Head portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of this Australian coin with an 'M' mintmark below the bust. This inscription reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D:'.

Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George Reverse

1873-M Sovereigns all feature Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the dragon design. The horse on which England's patron saint is mounted has a long tail. The date, displayed below, is noted to feature a somewhat bulbous '3', which is unique to this issue.

Melbourne Mint Gold Sovereign Specifications

Melbourne mint Sovereigns are struck in 22-carat gold to the same strict specifications as their London counterparts, following guidelines established in 1817. These coins weigh approximately 7.98 grams.

How Many 1873-M Sovereigns Were Minted?

752,199 gold Sovereigns were issued by the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint in 1873. All of these coins featured the Saint George reverse, unlike some years when both this and the shield back design were struck.
