Roman date 1887 silver Double Florins (S 3922, Bull 2695, ESC 394). 483,347 Double Florins were struck in 1887, making this first year of issue the second lowest mintage year in the series. Like all Double Florins, these 1887 coins feature the controversial Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria by Joseph Edgar Boehm to the obverse. The reverse has a complex heraldic design made up of four crowned shields of royal arms. There are two main types of 1887 Double Florin, distinguished by a tiny detail on the reverse. On this variety, the '1' in the date takes the form of a Roman 'I', as opposed to an Arabic numeral. Since the Double Florin series is so small, these different types are important to collectors building a complete series of this fascinating if ephemeral denomination.

What Are Double Florins?

The Double-Florin was a short-lived denomination struck by the Royal Mint between 1887 and 1890. Worth four Shillings, these coins were introduced as part of the coinage redesign that coincided with Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee but were quickly discontinued.

J E Boehm's Jubilee Head Portrait

The obverse features Joseph Edgar Boehm's Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a small crown and a long lace veil. This coinage effigy was introduced in this year and used for less than a decade. It is accompanied by a legend that runs 'VICTORIA DEI GRATIA'.

Roman I 1887 Double Florin

The reverse of these coins features a design by Leonard Charles Wyon showing four crowned shields of arms arranged in a cruciform pattern, with a Garter star in the centre and sceptres in the angles. The inscription reads 'REG: I887 FID: DEF: BRITT:'. This type is distinguished by a Roman-style 'I' in place of the number '1' in the date.
