Special transatlantic 1/4oz two coin set. 2020 marks four hundred years since the Pilgrims travelled from England to the New World. The group of families crossed the Atlantic in a ship called the Mayflower in a gruelling ten week voyage, landing near Cape Cod in November 1620. As one of the earliest colonial vessels, this Mayflower has become a cultural icon in the history of the United States. The anniversary of its journey was the subject of a pair of coins, issued in tandem by The Royal Mint and the United States Mint. It’s a rare collaboration, celebrating a shared historical event. The US-based designer and illustrator Chris Costello is the artist behind this collection, including the UK £25 1/4oz coin which features the Mayflower at full sail with stylised waves below and a compass symbol amid the rigging, reminding us of the journey into the unknown. This is paired with Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. His design for the US $10 1/4oz coin features portrait of pilgrims to the obverse with Native Americans observing a ship to the reverse. Both coins are struck from 7.80 grams of 999.9 fine gold to proof standard. They each have a diameter of 22.00 millimetres. They are presented together in a case with an outer sleeve bearing the logos of both national mints. Enclosed is a joint certificate of authenticity confirming that this set is from a limited edition of just 500.
