Buy Piedfort Sovereign 2022 Memorial Sovereigns Coins

Piedfort Sovereigns are twice the weight of an ordinary 'full' Sovereign. They're struck in 15.96 grams of 22-carat gold, retaining the same diameter of 22.05 millimetres but with a double-thickness milled edge. Piedfort Sovereigns were first issued by The Royal Mint in 2017, reflecting an old tradition of extra-heavy coins that traces its origins to medieval France where 'piedfort' means 'heavy measure'.

Special 2022 memorial Sovereign range from The Royal Mint, the first to feature a portrait of King Charles III, paired with a one-off royal arms reverse by Jody Clark: a tribute to the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. Shipping January 2023.
