Sealed Bag Of 2015 Royal Mint Trial One Pound Coins
What Are Trial Pieces?
Before new coins are issued for circulation, a mint may produce trial pieces (sometimes called 'pattern pieces') to test out design features and get the final approval from important officials. These coins are produced in small numbers and are popular with collectors thanks to their rarity and what they tell us about how coins are produced.
2015 12-Sided Trial Pound Coin
Twelve-sided, bi-metallic trial pieces like the ones in these sealed bags were produced by The Royal Mint before introducing new £1 coins in 2017. The new design was created to discourage counterfeiting, a problem that plagued the old round Pound coins struck from 1983.
Ian Rank-Broadley's Royal Portrait
These trail coins are dated 2015 but feature Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Many 2015-dated UK coins use Jody Clark's definitive effigy, which was introduced to circulating coinage this year.
Sealed Bag Of One Pound Coins
There are twenty coins inside these pre-owned sealed bags which have never been opened. These trial pieces are made of the same materials as the coins in your change and may display 'bag marks' caused by rubbing together.
