2011 Fifty Pence piece with Olympic rowing design. This UK Coin was issued by the Royal Mint as part of a collection celebrating the then upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics hosted in London. David Podmore's rowing design was chosen from 30,000 public submissions as one of twenty-nine that make up the commemorative Olympic collection. Podmore chose rowing as it is his favourite Olympic sport to watch and added words to his design to show off his graphic design and typography skills. Rowing is the only sport where Team GB have won a gold at every Summer Olympic games since 1984. The reverse of this Fifty Pence piece displays Podmore's design; a two-person rowing boat with rowers facing to the left, and the words 'EXCELLENCE', 'FRIENDSHIP', 'FAIR PLAY', 'RESPECT' all repeated twice in the boats wake. Above is the 2012 Summer Olympics' Logo and below are the worlds '50 PENCE'. On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. The 2011 Rowing 50ps are struck in cupronickel alloy to standard Fifty Pence piece specifications (weight: 8.00 grams, diameter: 27.30 millimetres). 1,717,300 of these coins entered circulation.
