Wide date 1888 Victorian silver Crowns (S 3921, Bull 2588, ESC 298). These .925 sterling silver coins are from a very low annual mintage of just 131,899 Crowns issued by the Royal Mint in 1888. All these coins feature Joseph Edgar Boehm's Jubilee Head portrait to the obverse. This effigy of Queen Victoria was unpopular at the time and was used on British coins for only a few years. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon design, created in the early 19th century. On this variety of 1888 Crown, the date below the engraving is spread with the numbers spaced wide apart. This type of 1888 Crown is understood to be scarcer than the narrow-date variant from the same year and is sought-after by collectors.

Jubilee Head Portrait Of Queen Victoria

The obverse of these coins is inscribed with the words 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:', encircling the Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria by Joseph Edgar Boehm. Victoria is shown wearing the Small Diamond Crown and a long lace veil.

Saint George Reverse With Wide Date

The date (1888) on the reverse of these coins is spread, the numerals widely spaced. It appears below an engraving by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci showing Saint George on a rearing horse slaying a dragon with his sword. The artist's initials are shown to the right of the date.

19th-century British Crowns are minted in .925 sterling silver. These large coins weigh approximately 28.28 grams and measure 38.6 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge.

1888 Victoria Crown Mintage Figures

1888 was the lowest mintage year of the Jubilee Head Crown series, with just 131,899 coins issued. This notably low figure includes both the rare wide date variant and the slightly more common narrow date type 1888 Crown.
