Copper pattern Farthing of Queen Anne, dated 1714, the last year of her reign. Obverse: draped bust of the Queen, facing left with legend around reading ‘ANNA · DEI · GRATIA ·’, the stops weak and hardly visible. Circle and beaded detail to rim, edge plain. Reverse shows the figure of Britannia seated on a globe facing left, a shield at her side and a spear and sprig of laurel in hand. Date - 1714 - below with ‘BRITAN NIA .’ around, divided by the design. Weight: 5.8 grams, diameter: 21.9 millimetres. Obverse die 2, reverse die E. Peck suggests that it’s this design that was intended for circulation, had Anne lived longer. These coins were produced under the supervision of Sir Isaac Newton, then Master of the Royal Mint with the engraving work attributed to John Croker, then Chief Engraver. A great example of a scarce and sought-after pattern. Grade: AEF - About Extremely Fine with attractive chocolate tone. References: S 3625, Peck 741.
