£1,500.00
A superb silver Halfcrown of Queen Anne dated 1703. The obverse features the first draped bust of the queen facing left, with the word ‘VIGO’ below indicating that the silver used to strike these coins was captured from Spanish treasure fleet at the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702. These coins celebrate an overwhelming success for the Grand Alliance in the early years of the War of the Spanish Succession. The reverse shows crowned cruciform shields around a central garter star, nothing in the angles. This design was changed when the Acts of Union united the legislatures of England and Scotland in 1707. Raised lettering to the edge of this coin indicates the regnal year ‘TERTIO’ (‘third’). Graded Extremely Fine, this Halfcrown is an interesting piece of British history and a great addition to any collection.
