William Wyon's Young Head Portrait

The obverse of this 1897 medal is inspired by William Wyon's Young Head coinage portrait, used on currency for the first several decades of Queen Victoria's reign. The design, adapted by George William de Saulles, incorporates the youthful left-facing bust, an olive branch, and the date of Victoria's accession to the British throne (1837). The inscription - 'LONGITVDO DIERVM IN DEXTERA EIVS / ET IN SINISTRA GLORIA' - comes from Proverbs 3:16: 'The length of days is in her right hand; wealth and honour in her left'.

Widowed Head Medal Reverse Design

The reverse of this large gold 1897 Diamond Jubilee medal features an older portrait of Victoria by Sir Thomas Brock, similar to the Old Head portrait this artist created for Victoria's coinage. The so-called Widowed Head was used on British currency from 1893. This elegant veiled portrait is accompanied by a long legend which reads 'VICTORIA ANNVM REGNI SEXAGESIMVM FELICITER CLAVDIT XX IVN · MDCCCXCVII ·'.

Official Royal Mint 1897 Diamond Jubilee Medal

This large gold medal was the official Royal Mint issue, made to celebrate Queen Victoria's 1897 Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years since her accession to the throne. The Royal Mint also issued a smaller gold medal, further examples of the same type in silver and bronze, alongside a wide variety of unofficial medals from a range of makers.
