A collectable and scarce hammered silver Forty Pence coin of Charles the First of Scotland, also Charles I of England. Part of the second issue coinage (1636) by Nicholas Briot. He superintended Scottish coinage in this period during which a distinct coinage continued to be minted from England, despite the union of the crowns, and for a short time under the Stuarts this included the unusual Forty Pence denomination. The obverse features the crowned bust of the king, facing right, the bust extending to the bottom edge of the coin. The legend around declares Charles to be king of Scotland, England, France and Ireland. The Roman numerals ‘XL’ appear behind Charles’ head, indicating the value (40d or 3s4d). The reverse of this coin features a thistle flower head with two leaves, surmounted by a crown. The thistle had been the national emblem of Scotland since the 1200s and found a prominent place on Scottish coinage in the 1500s. The reverse legend translates from the Latin as ‘the safety of the state is supreme law’. .925 sterling silver, 1.44 grams. Diameter: 19.5 millimetres. Grade: GF - A dark attractive tone on a good flan with minor clipping, Fine or slightly better. Spink 5548.
