£495.00
A collectable hammered silver Shilling of King Edward the Sixth with the mint mark of ‘y’. This indicates that this coin was struck in Southwark in the year 1551, four years into Edward VI’s short reign. The obverse features the facing bust of the young king, angled slightly left. To one side of the effigy is a Tudor rose, on the other, ‘XII’ to indicate the denomination (12 pence or one Shilling). The reverse shows a long cross, quartering a shield of royal arms representing England and France. In the latter years of his reign the quantity of silver in Edward’s coinage rose, representing a gradual reversal of the debasement policy instituted during the rule of his father, Henry VIII. Spink 2482, North 1937.
