£285.00
A rare and collectable hammered silver Groat of Henry the Eighth from the third and final coinage issue made during his lifetime, struck between 1544 and 1547 at the mint of Bristol. The obverse features the crowned bust of the king, facing forward and slightly to the right. The reverse shows the long cross with lis in the forks over royal shield of arms, the initial mark of ‘WS’ for William Sharington – notorious Wiltshire embezzler - before the wording for the Bristol Mint. These later debased coins are hard to find in very high grades and have a number of die variations making them interesting coins to collect and study. Spink 2372, North 1846.
