Buy a 1100-1135 Henry I Hammered Silver Penny Paven on Northampton

from
£575.00
A scarce penny of king Henry the First, struck in the early twelfth century at the mint of Northampton by the moneyer Paven. The obverse shows a crowned portrait of the king, facing slightly left. The reverse displays a square with concave surfaces and fleurs to the corners, quartered by a cross fleury with pellets in the angles. This type (BMC 15) is referred to as the ‘quadrilateral on cross fleury type’. The legend around identifies the moneyer and mint. An old ticket (included) identifies this penny as coming from the Beavois hoard, found in an unknown location, perhaps near Paris and dated 1140-1142. This hoard contains a single coin of Henry I’s predecessor, William II, and a range of coins from his successor, Stephen. Spink 1279, North 871.
