A stunning coin! Quatrefoil type Penny of king Cnut. The obverse shows a crowned left facing profile, the folds of drapery over the kings chest attractively arranged in parallel ‘hoops’. The reverse gives this type its name and features a voided short cross, quartering a quatrefoil, its points, within the angles of the cross terminating in pellets. There is extensive variation in die styles for this type, defined by Blackburn and Lyon. The reverse legend reads ‘+ BR | IHTN | ODLV | NDEI’ for the moneyer Brihtnoth and the mint of London. These Quatrefoil type Pennies (BMC VIII) were minted in the early part of Cnut’s reign in England, from after he became king following the death of Aethelred II and Eadmund Ironside in 1016/1017 until around the year 1023. In this period Cnut - also rendered Canute or Cnut the Great - ascended to the Danish throne (1018). He would later claim the throne of Norway (1028). The Quatrefoil type is one of three substantive types issued in England in Cnuts reign, alongside later ‘Pointed Helmet’ and ‘Short Cross’ types, both minted later. This coin weighs 1.06 grams and has a diameter of 19.1 millimetres. Grade: EF - Light grey patination - an excellent example for Extremely Fine. Spink 1157.
