A beautiful gold Stater of Alexander III of Macedon, better known as Alexander the Great. A lifetime issue: struck during his rule (336 to 323 BC). The obverse shows the head of Athena, facing right, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet, ornamented with a coiled snake and pushed back, exposing her face. A tiny thunderbolt appears below her neck. The reverse shows Nike, winged, holding a wreath in one hand and a stylis or ships mast in the other. A ‘HA’ monogram appears in the left field. During Alexander’s reign an immense coin issue was struck in his name across many lands and mints, proving lots of variants to collect and study. Sear 6702.
