Rare 1930 gold Sovereigns, struck at The Royal Mint branch in Melbourne, Australia. Only 77,588 King George V Sovereigns were produced with the 'M' mintmark in this year, which is the second lowest mintage figure for the Mebourne Mint. These coins are generally regarded as being more difficult for collectors to acquire, especially in the top grades. Melbourne was the second branch facility established by the UK's Royal Mint, opening in 1872 to take advantage of the close proximity of the city to the gold fields in Victoria State. Gold Sovereigns were produced in Melbourne until 1931, years after the London Mint had ceased to do so. In fact, between 1918 and 1932 Sovereigns were only minted overseas (with the exception of 1925). On the obverse of these scarce coins is Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal's portrait of the King, with the legend around reading: 'GEORGIVS D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP:'. This is so-called the 'small head' obverse, which was used between 1929 and 1932. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's masterpiece, centred on the legend of Saint George and the dragon. This design was created in 1817 during the reign of King George III and has become instantly recognisable to Sovereign collectors. A tiny 'M' to the ground below the dragon identifies these as branch mint coins. These historic collectables weigh 7.98 grams and are composed of 22-carat (91.67%) gold, measuring 22.05 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge. Minimum grade: VF - Very Fine.
