Collectable 1925 Perth Mint gold Sovereigns issued during the reign of King George V. 1,837,901 were struck with the 'P' mintmark in 1925 and are considered a scarce date, rated 'S' by Marsh, and are particularly sought-after in top grades. Perth became the third colonial outpost of the Royal Mint to be established in Australia and continued striking Sovereigns years after the London Mint ceased to do so. Each of these 1925 coins bears Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal's 'Large' or 'First Head' portrait of George V. This is paired with a much older reverse design: Benedetto Pistrucci's engraving of Saint George slaying a dragon. A dynamic and instantly recognisable motif, it was created in 1817 for the first modern Sovereigns. These Australian branch mint Sovereigns conform to standard specifications, being struck in 7.98 grams of 22-carat (916.7) gold with a diameter of 22.05 millimetres. Our circulated 1925 Perth Mint Sovereigns are graded Very Fine (VF) or better by our numismatists.

Portrait Of George V On 1925 Sovereigns

The first version of Edgar Bertram Mackennal's portrait of King George V, also known as the 'large head' engraving. Legend: 'GEORGIVS V D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP:'.

1925 Perth Mint Sovereign Reverse Design

Benedetto Pistrucci's engraving of St George and the dragon was first seen on Sovereigns in 1817. 'P' mintmark for the Perth mint is visible to the ground below with the date '1925' underneath.

Early 20th Century Sovereign Specifications

Historic branch mint Sovereign struck in 7.98 grams of 0.9167 fine (22 carat) gold. Actual gold weight: 0.2354 troy ounces. Diameter: 22.05 millimetres.

Scarce Date 1925-P Gold Full Sovereign

Records show that just 1,837,901 gold 'full' Sovereigns were struck at the Perth mint in 1925 which is significantly lower than the mintage figures seen for earlier years of King George V's reign. Marsh in his guide to the gold Sovereign series, rates this issue as 'S' for 'Scarce'.

Buying High-Grade Historic Sovereigns

Our pre-owned 1925-P Sovereigns are graded Very Fine (VF) or better by our expert numismatists.
