Scarce and sought-after 1876 Sydney mint gold Sovereigns (S 3858A, Marsh 115 - S). In this year, Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone, the Battle of Little Bighorn was fought, and Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India. It's a portrait of Victoria that appears on the obverse of these coins. The so-called Young Head effigy was designed by William Wyon and used on coins for decades. These Australian issues add a tiny mintmark below the bust, the 'S' indicating that this is a product of the Sydney mint. The reverse of these 1876 coins features Benedetto Pistrucci's Saint George and the dragon design. This was the only reverse design used on Sydney Sovereigns in 1876 when some 1,613,000 of these 22-carat gold coins were struck.

Records show that 1,613,000 gold Sovereigns were struck at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint in 1876. These coins all feature the Saint George reverse, as the shield-back design does not appear to have been minted this year.

Collecting Sydney Mint Gold Coins

Branch mint gold Sovereigns are a challenging and rewarding focus for the dedicated numismatist. Earlier Young Head issues are particularly fascinating due to the use of two distinct portraits and the number of known variants.
