£650.00
Gold ‘full’ Guinea of George I, dated 1726. The obverse shows the fifth type (older) right facing laureate portrait of George I with long curling hair. The space below the truncation of the effigy is blank though some Guineas issued in this year show a tiny elephant and castle below, a nod to the source of the gold: the Royal African Company. The reverse features four shields of royal arms, each crowned, arranged in a cruciform pattern with spears in the angles. The shields represent England/Scotland, Ireland, France and Hanover. George I was the first British monarch of the House of Hanover, ascending to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland in 1714. He ruled until his death in 1727 making the 1726 issue the penultimate George I Guinea. Weight: 8.06 grams, diameter: 24.8 millimetres. Grade: A good budget price Guinea - solder blob to obverse probably from mount, smooth appearance with good detail. Spink 3633.
