from
£1,850.00
A collectable gold Laurel from king James the First’s third and final coinage issue (1619 to 1625). The Trefoil mint mark to both sides indicated that this coin was struck in the year 1624 at London’s Tower mint. The obverse shows the fourth laureate bust of the king, facing left, with an ‘XX’ mark of value displayed at his nape (a Laurel was work 20 shillings). The reverse shows a crowned, square-topped shield of royal arms with a Latin legend around which, translated, reads ‘I will make them one nation’. James I’s ascension to the English throne in 1603 united the Scottish and English crowns though the nations remained separated sovereign states. An exciting opportunity to add one of these sought after gold coins of James I to your collection. Spink 2638B.
