Buy a 270-275 AD Aurelian Gold Aureus Mars Ticinum

from
£8,000.00
A extremely rare gold Aureus of the emperor Aurelian struck at the mint of Ticinum in the year 274 AD. In 271 Aurelian fought a decisive battle near the town in modern Lombardy, driving the invading Juthungi from Roman Italy. The obverse features a laureate draped and cuirassed bust of the emperor, facing right. The reverse shows the figure of Mars, striding right with an elaborate trophy slung over his left shoulder, a spear in his right hand. The legend reads ‘P M TB [sic] P V · II · COS · II PP’. Between his campaigns, Aurelian made time for major monetary reform and this Aureus dates from the post-reform period. It would be difficult to find a better example: a great addition to any serious numismatic collection. Sear 11489; Calico 4024; Estiot 618; RIC 16.
